It is no secret that Google is the number one most popular search engine available to today. Everyday the Google team expand Google’s capabilities making it one unique tool that can service all you Internet needs. Webandrank have put together a list of useful tricks when using Google. This can help to improve your understanding of where Google came from, where Google is going, and how you can make Google work better for you.
Google Tip #1
Google has a calculator function. You can enter any calculation into the search bar and it will return the calculation for you.
Often it can be a hassle to open the windows calculator especially if you work online all day. You can save extra seconds by banging the calculation into Big G.
Google Tip #2
Google allows you to search for specific document types. By using ‘filetype:’ operator you can locate specific file types, if you want to find pdf docs about SEO you can search ‘SEO filetype:pdf’.
Google Tip #3
It is possible to search Google for keywords in the body of websites by using the syntax ‘intext’ in the search. Let’s use ‘web rank service’ as an example, enter intext:web rank service and check out the results.
Google Tip #4
You can not only search for keywords in the body text but also in the URL of websites. In this day and age URLs are no longer cryptic, they are keyword rich clearly indicating what the page is about. Searching URLs has the same system as body text and filetype, use the syntax ‘inurl’ and you’re away. Check out the example below for inurl:web rank service.
Google Tip #5
Want to search for anchor text? Well this is possible too; just use the ‘inanchor’ syntax.
Google Tip #6
Another useful tool from Google is the text function. It is possible to text a word to GOOGLE (466453) and they will immediately send the definition back to you.
Google Tip #7
To find out the last result and the next fixtures for your favourite sports team just simply search for the team name, for example ‘manchester united’
Google Tip #8
For definitions use ‘define:’, example define:ruction.
Google Tip #9
One of Webandrank’s personal favourites has to be the face recognition search. If you want to search for images of a specific celebrity and don’t want unrelated pictures getting into your search then you can add ‘&imgtype=face’ to the end of search. Have a look at the differences between searches for ‘paris’ and ‘paris &imgtype=face’
Google Tip #10
Google has been collecting a lot of data on all of us and it is now one of the best places to find people and there phone numbers. Below are the ways to find people in the USA, at this time Webandrank is not aware of how to do this in other countries.
first name (or initial), surname name, city
first name (or initial), surname name, state
first name (or initial), surname name, area code
first name (or initial), surname name, zip code
phone, including area code
last name, city, state
It is possible to remove yourself from this list, Webandrank highly recommends taking this action if you have no interest in sharing this information, you must visit Google Phonebook Name Removal.
Have fun using these tools, Google will keep expanding its reach across the Internet and into our lives off-line. Again this raises the question of ‘dictatorship’ or ‘guardian’, let’s hope Google maintains its reputation as a Platonian benign guardian and does not become a draconian dictatorship.
