Hallo Facebook? The word on the tech grape vine is that Facebook is moving forward to develop its own mobile phone. This may have Apple and Google getting sweaty palms as they worry about what sort of impact this can have on the smartphone market.
Just like Apple and Google, the Facebook team is developing the software while a third party builds the hardware. The project is a secret one but has been revealed by an unknown source. Reportedly two high level Facebook employees are working on the project which is not only hidden from the general public but also from most of the Facebook staff.
Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are two guys heading this secret team. Both guys have great resumes. Hewitt helped create Firefox, worked on Parakey and created all of Facebook’s iPhone web apps. Papakipos is equally impressive; he headed the Google Chrome OS project.
I’m gonna Call Facebook
Facebook has being feeling the growing threat from the iPhone and Android platforms; this is probably why they have started to develop a new phone. The guess is that Facebook will integrate deeply into the contacts list and other core functions of the phone. It’s is likely that apps such as Facebook Places may really take off on the Facebook Phone.
The look and feel of the phone can only be guessed at, same too with the launch date. I must remind you that this is only speculation but it’s got the industry watching.
